When Greg Gutierrez dropped off the Bassmaster Elite Series after six events last year due to his wife's illness and impending surgery, it was with the hope that he'd be back in 2009. That won't happen, however.
Bobbie Gutierrez, who underwent a successful operation last spring to remove two tumors from one of her lungs, is still dealing with the heart issue that caused the original symptoms from which her ailments were diagnosed. That will keep her husband close to home during the upcoming year.
"There are way too many things happening with Bobbie, and I can't leave to go back to the Elites," said the Californian, who also holds down a full-time job as a fire captain. "There's an ongoing medical problem and the resolution for it hasn't been found.
"(The Elite Series) is 11 tournaments where I'm gone for 2 weeks at a time. I'm opting to stay more local and regional." Read More
Bobbie Update
I know it has been several days since Bobbie’s operation and my last update. I have several answers for you and wanted to share some good news with you all.
The doctor came in a couple of nights ago and showed us the pathology reports from the masses removed from Bobbie’s lungs, the good news is they were not malignant or cancerous but the bad news is they were of an undetermined cause. The doctor wants to run some more tests to determine the origin and cause of these masses considering the one in her left lung was causing lung tissues to die.
Now we must eliminate any shared conditions or environmental conditions at home, work or where every we frequent. I guess that means I will be tested next week to make sure I do not share any of the same conditions.
Bobbie has been doing well in her recovery and had been getting up taking walks and limited only nasal oxygen, she did hit a small speed bump yesterday when she came down with a fever and experienced some pain during oxygen therapy. It turned out that she has a partial lung collapse on the left side and the doctors began a more aggressive oxygen therapy treatment requiring she treated and walked every 4 hours around the clock.
When the doctor told here she couldn’t go home until they got her breathing controlled, she told him “I will do what ever it takes to be able to go home”, so last night she told me “if they are going to wake me up every four hours I going to get some sleep so go home and get some rest too”, and then she kicked me out at 5 pm.
I imagine she will be a tired puppy this morning being woke up every 4 hours with a treatment lasting 1 hour trust me, 3 hours of sleep does not regenerate this girls happy face, and there’s not enough coffee at “Starbucks” to make her smile when she gets woke up in the middle of the night. (HA)
Blessings to all
Dear friends, family and well wishers,
I want you to know how very important your support has been for both Bobbie and me. Your well wishes and prayers have strengthened our hearts as well as our belief and faith that the power of prayer works and has changed our lives.
Today Bobbie went into surgery, it started early at about 6:00 am, the surgery was completed at about 1:45 pm. When he finished the surgeon said he had to remove the left lower lobe and the small piece on the right lung as predicted. He said felt optimistic about the possibility of the masses being of a non malignant type but cautioned me we would know for sure in about 3-4 days.
It was a relief to talk with Bobbie, she told me she was in minimal pain but was struggling to talk with limited breaths. She looked great…and was resting comfortably when I was ushered out of ICU at 6 tonight.
Now the new series of waiting starts…next is to find out the pathology results to determine the path we must take next.
Again, I want to thank you all, from our family to yours. Your prayers have been heard and may you share the same blessings we have.

Greg Staying Home
Elite Series pro, Greg Gutierrez, has announced he's withdrawing from the 2008 Bassmaster Elite Series season.
"It is with great sadness that I must inform my bass fishing family that I cannot continue competing in the Elite Series this year," the two-time Classic qualifier and full-time California firefighter said in making the announcement. "My wife of 21 years, Bobbie, was recently diagnosed with two masses in her lungs, one on the left and one on the right.
Gutierrez felt that leading into this event he'd be "lucky" to weigh in 10 pounds a day. But a mediocre practice period morphed into 2 days of solid catches come tournament time.
The California pro said he's "seeing" his fish, "but not necessarily sight-fishing. I'm not sitting on one spot throwing at one fish on a bed. I'm basically going through areas and catching glimpses of fish, then coming back and fishing for them."
One of his day-2 weigh fish revealed its presence when it came up from the depths and aggressively flared its gills at his trolling motor.
"I've seen them do that a few times before," he said. "They'll try to attack anything when it's spawn time. I backed up and tried to fish for that fish, but it wouldn't bite. So I fished around and then stopped back on that spot about an hour later all it took was one cast up there and I got bit. That was about a 3-pounder."
He's not employing a cast-and-cruise strategy like many of his fellow competitors, instead he's "slowly and methodically" picking apart his areas.
"Yesterday I fished one pocket pretty much exclusively," he said. "I caught two 5s out of there and then today I caught two more 5s out of that general area. So it's definitely paying off to slow down and work my spots.
"I think I've pretty much spent that area, but I saw a few more in a different spot this afternoon. I'll probably run there first thing in the morning. If I can get some decent fish out of there I've got a spot on the total opposite end of the lake I'll probably look at." Read More
"Any time you've got a floating tree in a bunch of standing timber, it becomes an automatic focus for those fish," he says. "It offers more shade and something different than everything else around it. They're just going to gravitate to it."
Professional anglers are businesses unto themselves. Their "corporations" require exhausting efforts - both in the office and on the water - to be successful.
